Music icon Bruce Springsteen is facing drunken driving charges.

According to a spokesperson for the National Park Service, the 71-year-old rocker was arrested on November 14 in the Gateway National Recreation Area on the New Jersey coast.

Springsteen was cited for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area.

The park is on a narrow, beach-ringed peninsula, with views across a bay to New York City. It is about 24km north of Asbury Park, where Springsteen got his start as a musician and bandleader and which was later made famous with his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.

The Boss - who was cooperative throughout the arrest - will have a court appearance through Federal Court in Newark as the Gateway National Recreation Area is federal land.

Springsteen has no prior DWIs or arrests in New Jersey, according to public records.
