There are 61 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases in New Zealand, Director of Public Health Dr Caroline McElnay says.

There are 47 confirmed cases and 14 probable cases. No further deaths have happened.

A total of 82 people have now recovered, while 14 people are in hospital, McElnay said.

Two of those patients are in ICU.

There are now 708 cases in total in this country.

McElnay said there was still a strong link to overseas travel, with just over half of the cases reporting overseas travel.

About 1 per cent of cases were due to community transmission.

Anyone with respiratory symptoms consistent with Covid-19 should now be tested regardless of whether they had been overseas or in close contact with a confirmed case.

The update comes after New Zealand has its first death due to coronavirus on Sunday.

A 70-year-old woman, who had underlying health conditions, died in Grey Base Hospital on Sunday morning and it's not yet known how she caught the coronavirus.
