A nine-metre high mural of George Michael has been given the all clear to be painted in the north-west London suburb of Brent where the pop icon grew up.

The painting has been commissioned as part of Brent's celebration as London Borough of Culture 2020 and will recognise Michael's contribution to the arts and celebrate his legacy.

Well-known British artist Dawn Mellor has been given the honour of creating the mural, which will be revealed on September 19 on Kingsbury Road.

George Michael made his name in the 80s as part of pop duo Wham! alongside Andrew Ridgeley, but eventually enjoyed a more successful solo career.

The 'Faith' singer died on Christmas Day in 2016 at the age of 53.
