Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly set to visit Australia amidst the country's devastating bushfires.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, talks between the Australian government and Kensington Palace have been underway "for weeks", however, an official invitation from Prime Minister Scott Morrison is expected to be issued this week.

It is hoped that a visit from the royal couple - who have Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, 21 months, together - will put a spotlight on recovery efforts, bolstering financial support for survivors and volunteers.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to visit bushfire-ravaged areas in New South Wales and Victoria.

It is not yet known whether their children will join them on the tour.

Over the past few months, while the crisis was ongoing, the couple has paid tribute to the "incredible strength and resilience of all the Australian people."

Releasing a statement last month, they said: "We continue to be shocked and deeply saddened to hear about the fires that are destroying homes, livelihoods and wildlife across much of Australia.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people and communities who are affected by this devastating event. We send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who have tragically lost their lives, and the brave firefighters who continue to risk their own lives to save the lives of others."

On Australia Day, the pair also took to their official Kensington Palace account on Instagram to share an image with themselves and a koala from a previous tour.

The post was captioned: "Wishing all of our Australian followers a happy Australia Day. This year we pay tribute to the incredible strength and resilience of all the Australian people and communities who have been impacted by the devastating bushfires."

The tour would mark William's fifth visit to Australia and the second for Catherine.

The devastating bushfires season in Australia has killed 33 people, destroyed more than 2,000 homes and wiped out over a billion animals.
