Like so many celebrities around the world, Sir Rod Stewart took to social media to express his grief over the loss of Queen Elizabeth II but also revealed his own personal loss in his family.

The 'Maggie May' singer told fans it had been "a devastating 48 hours" following the death of the Queen and his brother Don the day before.

Alongside an image of a singular silver crown against an all-black background, the music legend wrote: "It has been a devastating 48 hours. My brother Don passed on Tuesday at 94 and today Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at 96.

"Like Don, the Queen has been a presence all through my life as a great unifier. A shining star that will never fade in our hearts and souls."

He added: "What a privilege it was to perform for her. My deepest sympathies to the Royal Family. God save the King."

The 77-year-old was knighted by Prince William at Buckingham Palace in 2016 for his contributions to music and charity.

Stewart most recently performed for Her Majesty at the BBC's Party at The Palace for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebration back in June.
