Long before Byron Bay was put on the map for being a paradise destination, Olivia Newton-John purchased a beautiful 55a property in Ballina.

After she shot to global stardom off the back of the hit movie Grease in 1978, Olivia and her lifelong friend Jillian McGrath flew to Ballina to look at buying the private country escape.

"It was about having a peaceful base that was completely private that was true to who she is: the animal lover and the environmentalist," said McGrath.

Olivia still returns to the area nearly 40 years after purchasing the property, but chooses to stay at the Gaia Retreat & Spa instead of the farmhouse.

Jillian is now the estate agent that has been tasked with selling the property for just over $5.7 million (NZD).

A lot has changed on the property since Olivia and Jillian purchased it - the first being the amalgamation of the five surrounding properties in 1981.

It was extended again in 1983 and 2013, and now includes a tennis court, a creek, two dams, and pasture.

"The expansive view from the farm is breathtaking and captured my heart all those years ago," Olivia says. "The 136-plus acres gives total privacy with peaceful calming energy.

"It's a magical spot that is the home for many different species of wildlife."
