A 1980 letter penned by Prince Charles to an old flame revealed that he was anxious about getting divorced from Diana even before marrying her.

Writing to ex-girlfriend Janet Jenkins, Charles admitted that he dreaded the prospect of divorce and the effect of such on any children he may have gone on to have.

He was responding to news that Jenkins - a Welsh born receptionist at the British consulate in Montreal, Canada - had herself only recently been divorced, saying that it was lucky she 'discovered the mistake early enough and you didn't start a family'.

The second in line to the throne then added: 'Starting a family and making a mistake like that is frankly, something which concerns me enormously.

'I shall just have to get married as soon as possible and then all these people might relax a little.

'I still think my solution of marrying a girl from each Commonwealth country is the best one!'

The letter was written in June 1980, 11 months before his wedding to Lady Diana Spencer.

Its content has only now came to light as it is one of six that have been put up for auction in the United States.

The letter is being sold by Alicia Carroll, a Los Angeles collector and dealer of British royal memorabilia, who is hoping to net $3,900 (£2,500) from their sale.

Carroll previously attempted to auction the letters on eBay in 2009 with an asking price of $30,000 (£20,000), with one buyer coming forward but his credit card being declined.

The pair wed at St Paul's Cathedral just 11 months after Charles penned his divorce fears to Janet Jenkins

Charles married Diana in July 1981 but they separated in 1992, divorcing in 1996.

A year later, Diana was killed when the car she was a passenger in crashed in Paris.

The Prince first met mother-of-one Miss Jenkins when she was 25 when he visited Montreal on a visit with the Royal Navy.

He sent her many letters, many of which declared his strong feelings towards her.
