It's one of the most popular board games in the world, but one couple embarking on some home renovations made an incredible discovery when they found a giant handprinted Monopoly board underneath their carpet.

The huge board - which features chance boxes, a jail, a community chest, railway stations and classic street names and stations from the American version of the popular game - appeared to have been painted onto the floor by the previous homeowners years ago.

Taking to Reddit to share the discovery, one of the couple's relatives wrote: "While tearing up their carpet, my in-laws found a giant monopoly board."

The snap shows a perfect replica of the family-friendly game, with the massive board taking up most of the floor space.

The artist had painstakingly copied out all 40 descriptions, and their prices, including Reading Railroad, Vermont Avenue, Oriental Avenue, Connecticut Avenue and Income Tax.

And they had even included each set's colour, which had inevitably faded over time.

The post has had more than 1,900 comments, with one user suggesting game boards painted onto basement floors were all the rage back in the '50s.

Very cool!
