While we can't travel overseas, we can travel in our own beautiful backyard for cheap!

Before COVID-19, campervan hires could cost hundreds of dollars a night - often making them not as cost-effective for locals.

But now that has changed ...

With international tourism dead due to the border closure, about 2,500 motorhomes are sitting idle across the country.

So in a bid to get the country moving again, Tourism Holdings is offering Kiwis a three or more day holiday for just $29 a day!

The discount applies through to the end of October and includes Queen's Birthday weekend, Labour weekend and the July and September school holidays.

PLUS, Kiwis can take their pets!

The initiative will hopefully enable Kiwis to have a well-deserved holiday and support regional communities and small businesses feeling the pain of reduced visits from international visitors and local travellers.

The offer represents a 35-40 per cent discount on usual winter campervan rates and a 65-70 per cent decrease on September school holiday to October end rates.

Rates range from $29-$69 a day and vehicles can be booked now with a $1 deposit.

The company is also offering discounts at its cave tourism hotspot the Waitomo Group of visitor attractions.

So what are you waiting for?! It's time to get exploring!
