Elton John and Taron Egerton absolutely rocked the Cannes Film Festival today, when they took to the stage to perform a spectacular duet after the world premiere of the music legend's biopic, Rocketman.

The surprise performance 'Rocket Man' saw the 72-year-old seated behind the piano while Taron took the lead, later duetting through the song’s chorus.

And it was a truly electrifying duet.

Taron – who is best known for his roles in Kingsman, Sing and Eddie The Eagle – has previously proven that he has the voice to take on the iconic role with his rendition of the hit song.

The 29-year-old actor - who sings every song in the movie as he portrays a young flamboyant Elton - has blown everyone away with his impressive pipes.

In fact, John himself thinks Taron sings his songs better than anyone else.

"When I watch the movie, I don’t see an actor," John said. "I see myself. And that is an extraordinary thing for an actor to do. He has given a million per cent of him in this performance."

The film's premiere today earned an enthusiastic five-minute standing ovation, during which Egerton was moved to tears.

John told the crowd: "This has been a very emotional night for me.

"Even if the movie doesn’t make one penny at the box office, which will kill [Paramount CEO] Jim Gianopulos, it is the movie I wanted to make."

Rocketman is set to be released in New Zealand cinemas on May 30 – and we absolutely can not wait!

The film, which is directed by Dexter Fletcher, takes a look into the legendary musician's influential career and at the highs and lows of his personal life.

Rocketman also stars actors Richard Madden, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jamie Bell and Gemma Jones.

What an unforgettable moment!
