Actress Jean, who played the Street’s iconic Hilda Ogden for 23 years, died in hospital just three days after her 90th birthday.

The woman known to millions as Hilda Ogden passed away peacefully early Friday.

She had been taken into hospital on Tuesday, the day of her birthday, after feeling unwell.

Nominated for a BAFTA TV award for best actress for her role as the rollers and headscarf-wearing Rover's Return charlady in 1987, the Liverpool-born actress played Hilda for 23 years from 1964.

She won the Royal Television Society best actress award in 1985, following one of her character's most memorable - and most sombre - storylines after Hilda's beloved layabout husband Stan died the year before.
